There is a lesson I keep learning, first at the Vatican in Rome, then in Greece, and now in Myanmar, and it is: Cover Thy Knees. Looking back, the skirt I wore in Greece, (where I was chased out of a mountainside monastery by a screaming monk, shaking a broom), was indeed blasphemously short. Today’s knee baring incident was easily solved with a last minute purchase of a ‘longyi’: a two metre swatch of fabric costing $8-$12, that ties at the waist. The ladies at the market swaddled me in my new tubular confines, and sent me on my way to visit the temples and pagodas. A proper lady at last.
